Taco Bell's Triple Double Crunchwrap

I feel as though it's important to start this post with a disclosure of honesty and potential bias. Those who know me well know that I have an undying, unconditional, and potentially unhealthy love for Taco Bell. It is my honor and duty to you, my reader, to set these feelings aside and to provide you honest and valuable insight to current culinary conditions.

Now, let's get started with this week's Limited Edition Eat! This past Thursday was National Taco Day and I have never been one to pass up the opportunity to celebrate an arbitrary food holiday. Filled with the excitement of the occasion, I hopped in my vehicle and headed to my local Taco Bell for some fine fast food fare and found myself ordering the Triple Double Crunchwrap. Now, this isn't a brand new product for Taco Bell as it is an item that has come and gone in the past, and promises to be only a limited edition item in this go around too.

As with all reviews, we must start with the expectation versus reality of the Triple Double Crunchwrap. Pictured above we have the standard stock photo provided by Taco Bell of their limited edition edible. We see a flour tortilla that is perfectly and gently browned, a lush green serving of lettuce adorned with tomato and hints of sour cream, just below are two crunchy corn tortilla shells sandwiching juicy seasoned beef and liquid nacho bliss. It's appealing and pleasing to the eye, hell it looks downright delicious.

In reality, I wish my Triple Double Crunchwrap looked more like the stock photo. I found the lettuce to be plentiful, but not as sizable as the images. The disappointment really laid in the meat filling, or lack there of. The stock image is bountiful and and suggests the joy of true American excess. It left me wanting more. In reality, it's not exactly a bad thing in that regard though.

Comedian Jim Gaffigan used to do a bit about being a waiter at a Mexican restaurant:
Mexican food's great but it's essentially all the same ingredients. So, as a waiter you'd have to deal with these stupid questions. People would be like, "What is nachos?"
"Nachos? Tortilla with meat, cheese, or vegetables.''
"Oh, well what is a burrito?"
"Tortilla with meat, cheese, or vegetables."
"Okay what is a tostada?"
"Tortilla with meat, cheese or vegetables.
"Okay what is.."
"Look! It's all the same!"
Mexican food is great, but is all the same. It's almost like a conspiracy. It's almost like they had a meeting 200 years ago in Mexico City and one guy stood up and was like, "Look the reason I got everyone here is very simple. I was thinking we could rename this one entree seven times and sell it to the North Americans."
This observation proves to be unequivocally true with this Taco Bell treat too. Part of the reason I've started this blog is that I enjoy the adventure that comes along with trying new things, but in that pursuit I've found myself bored with this product. Sure, it was delicious but it's Taco Bell, and as I've mentioned before I have a bias toward loving their products. It doesn't in any way stand out as something new and unique though. There was an excitement that came with the Doritios Locos Taco. It's was a new revelation with a new flavor for an old favorite. It spiced things up a bit. All this product intends to do is add more meat to an existing meal. It's good, but it's boring. It's a paradox.

Is it worth it though? In the sense that it's a limited edition item, absolutely! The original Crunchwrap Supreme combo comes with one hard taco and a drink for $6.19, but this Triple Double Crunchwrap box has two hard tacos, a drink, and (in theory) a more filling Crunchwrap for only $5.00. It's a deal in comparison, and because of this my top pick on the Taco Bell filling, for now.
